European long-distance paths

A network of long-distance hiking routes crossing Europe, designated by the European Ramblers’ Association and marked E1 through E12. The paths connect national trail systems across borders.

European Ramblers’ Association founding: The postwar establishment of a federation linking national walking associations in Europe. The association’s formation created an organization capable of coordinating cross-border paths.
Cultural route: A route organized around shared historical, artistic, or cultural heritage across places. E-paths can expose walkers to regional cultures, though their defining purpose is hiking rather than heritage interpretation.
National trail: A waymarked walking route organized within a country, often linking regions or protected landscapes. E-paths commonly follow existing national trails rather than creating wholly separate routes.
E3 European long-distance path: A European long-distance path running from the Atlantic coast of Portugal to the Black Sea. E3 demonstrates the network’s west–east reach across Europe.
