Knowra European Plain European Plain The European Plain is a broad, low-lying region extending across northern and eastern Europe from the Atlantic coast to the Ural Mountains. Its mostly flat terrain includes fertile farmland, river basins, and glacial landscapes.
North European Plain : A lowland region stretching from northern France and Belgium through Germany and Poland to western Russia. This western and central belt forms a major, densely settled part of the European Plain.
Glacial landform : A landform created or substantially modified by the movement, melting, or deposits of glaciers. Glacial processes account for many of the plain’s ridges, basins, and surface deposits.
Agriculture in Europe : The cultivation of crops and raising of livestock across Europe’s varied climates and landscapes. Fertile soils and broad fields make the plain one of Europe’s major agricultural regions.
Po Valley : A fertile lowland in northern Italy enclosed by the Alps and Apennines and drained by the Po River. It is another major European lowland, but it is geographically separate from the European Plain.
East European Plain : A vast lowland region of eastern Europe, extending from the Baltic region toward the Ural Mountains. This eastern sector carries the plain across much of European Russia.
Moraine : An accumulation of sediment transported and deposited by a glacier. Moraines form ridges across parts of the plain where former ice margins paused or retreated.
European inland waterways : Europe’s navigable rivers and canals used for transport, trade, and recreation. The plain’s large rivers and gentle gradients favor inland navigation.
Pannonian Basin : A low-lying basin in central Europe centered on Hungary and bounded by surrounding highlands. Its enclosed basin setting contrasts with the European Plain’s broad, open east–west reach.
Fennoscandian Shield : An ancient region of exposed crystalline bedrock covering much of Norway, Sweden, Finland, and northwest Russia. Its uplands border the plain to the north and contrast with its low relief.
European watershed : A network of drainage divides separating the river systems that flow toward Europe’s surrounding seas. The plain’s low relief lets major drainage basins spread across broad areas.
