European Southern Observatory

The European Southern Observatory (ESO) is an intergovernmental organization that builds and operates major astronomical observatories in Chile and supports research by its member states.

Very Large Telescope: An array of four 8.2-meter telescopes and four smaller auxiliary telescopes at ESO’s Paranal Observatory. Its four unit telescopes form ESO’s flagship optical and infrared facility.
Interferometry: A technique that combines waves from multiple telescopes to achieve the angular resolution of a much larger instrument. It lets facilities such as the VLTI resolve details beyond a single telescope’s reach.
Walter Baade: A German-American astronomer whose work on stellar populations and galaxies reshaped twentieth-century astronomy. His advocacy helped inspire plans for a joint European observatory in the Southern Hemisphere.
Michel Mayor: A Swiss astronomer who shared the 2019 Nobel Prize in Physics for discovering an exoplanet orbiting a Sun-like star. His planet discovery used observations from the ESO 3.6-metre Telescope.
European Research Area: A framework for integrating research systems and enabling collaboration across European countries. ESO is a long-running example of European states sharing research infrastructure.
Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array: A radio interferometer in Chile’s Atacama Desert operated through an international partnership involving ESO. ESO is one of ALMA’s three international partners.
Adaptive optics: A method that corrects image distortion in real time by compensating for atmospheric turbulence. ESO’s adaptive-optics systems sharpen ground-based images through Earth’s atmosphere.
Jan Oort: A Dutch astronomer known for foundational work on the Milky Way and the structure of the Solar System. He helped advance the proposal for a European southern observatory.
Didier Queloz: A Swiss astronomer who shared the 2019 Nobel Prize in Physics for discovering the exoplanet 51 Pegasi b. He made the discovery with Michel Mayor using ESO telescope data.
European Space Agency: An intergovernmental organization that coordinates European space exploration and satellite programs. ESA is another European science organization, but it focuses on space missions rather than ground-based observatories.
