Ordinary legislative procedure : The EU lawmaking process in which the European Parliament and Council jointly adopt a Commission proposal. This is the main route for adopting EU legislation and the procedure’s central institutional pattern.
Special legislative procedure : An EU lawmaking route in which the Council or Parliament adopts an act with the other institution playing a limited role. Unlike the ordinary procedure, it does not generally give Parliament and Council equal legislative roles.
Treaty on European Union : An EU founding treaty that sets out the Union’s values, institutions, and core constitutional rules. It defines institutional roles and provides treaty rules relevant to the Union’s lawmaking framework.
Regulation (European Union) : An EU legal act that is binding in its entirety and directly applicable in every member state. Regulations are one common form of legislation adopted through EU procedures.

Directive (European Union) : An EU legal act binding on member states as to the result, while leaving national authorities the choice of form and methods. Directives translate legislative decisions into obligations that states implement through national law.
European Parliament : The directly elected parliamentary institution of the European Union. Parliament examines, amends, and votes on legislation alongside the Council.
Consent procedure : A procedure requiring Parliament’s approval or rejection of a measure without allowing it to amend the text. It gives Parliament a veto rather than the ordinary procedure’s power to amend.
