Eurytherm

A eurytherm is an organism that tolerates a wide range of environmental temperatures. Its thermal tolerance may come from physiological flexibility, behavior, or both.

Thermoregulation: The physiological and behavioral processes by which organisms regulate body temperature. Eurytherms tolerate broad temperature variation through temperature regulation and adjustment.
Stenotherm: An organism that tolerates only a narrow range of environmental temperatures. Stenotherms occupy the narrow-tolerance end of the same thermal-breadth distinction.
Thermal niche: The range of temperatures under which a species can survive, grow, or reproduce. A eurytherm's broad tolerance can produce a wide thermal niche.
Thermal tolerance: The capacity of an organism to survive or function across a range of temperatures. Eurythermy is specifically broad thermal tolerance.
Carp: Freshwater fish in the cyprinid family, widely cultivated and introduced beyond their native ranges. Common carp tolerate substantial seasonal and geographic temperature variation.
Thermal acclimation: A reversible adjustment of an organism's physiology after exposure to a new temperature regime. Acclimation can extend the temperatures an individual eurytherm functions in.
Ectotherm: An organism whose body temperature depends substantially on external heat sources. Ectothermy describes heat source, not the breadth of temperatures tolerated.
Species distribution: The geographic area occupied by a species over a specified period. Temperature tolerance can constrain where a species persists.
Critical thermal maximum: The temperature above which an organism loses coordinated function during acute warming. It provides one measure of the upper boundary of thermal tolerance.
Tardigrade: A microscopic animal known for surviving severe environmental stress in a dormant state. Some tardigrades withstand broad temperature extremes, especially while dormant.
