Evolutionary linguistics

Evolutionary linguistics studies the origins of human language and the evolution of languages through biological and cultural processes.

Language change: The transformation of a language’s sounds, words, grammar, and meanings over time. Cultural transmission lets linguistic features change across generations without genetic change.
Origin of language: The emergence of language as a distinctive human capacity and social practice. This is the central historical problem evolutionary linguistics seeks to explain.
Historical linguistics: The study of how languages change and how they are historically related. Its methods reconstruct language histories, though they cannot directly reach language’s first origins.

Adaptive function of language: The proposed benefits that could explain why language evolved and persisted in humans. Competing accounts emphasize cooperation, social bonding, information sharing, or other advantages.
