Exergy

Exergy is the maximum useful work obtainable as a system reaches equilibrium with a specified environment. It measures how much of a system’s energy can be converted into useful work under those conditions.

Dead state: A state in which a system is in thermodynamic equilibrium with its environment and can yield no useful work. It defines the endpoint against which a system’s maximum useful work is measured.
Thermodynamic system: A defined quantity of matter or region in space chosen for thermodynamic analysis. Exergy is calculated for a system relative to its surroundings.
Exergy efficiency: A measure comparing useful exergy output with exergy supplied to a process or device. It evaluates how effectively a system uses its available work potential.
Energy: A conserved physical quantity that can be transferred or transformed but not created or destroyed. Unlike energy, exergy can be destroyed as irreversibility increases.
Exergy balance: A conservation-style accounting equation for exergy transfer, storage, and destruction in a system. It tracks where available work enters, leaves, or is lost.
Thermodynamic work: Energy transfer across a system boundary associated with an organized force acting through a displacement. Exergy measures the maximum useful work a process can deliver.
Thermoeconomic analysis: The integration of thermodynamic performance analysis with economic costing of energy systems. Exergy destruction helps assign costs to inefficient components.
Energy efficiency: The ratio of useful energy output to energy input for a process or device. A high energy efficiency does not necessarily mean high exergy efficiency.
Exergy destruction: The loss of exergy caused by irreversible processes, quantified through entropy generation. It captures the work potential consumed by irreversibility.
First law of thermodynamics: The principle that energy is conserved, changing forms or crossing system boundaries but not being created or destroyed. Exergy analysis supplements energy conservation by tracking energy quality.
