Exhumation

Exhumation is the exposure of rocks once buried at depth through uplift and removal of overlying material. It brings rocks closer to Earth's surface without necessarily changing their original composition.

Rock uplift: The upward movement of rock relative to a reference surface, commonly driven by tectonic forces or buoyancy. Uplift raises buried rocks toward the surface, though it does not by itself remove their cover.
Exhumation rate: The rate at which previously buried rocks approach Earth's surface through uplift and removal of overburden. Rates quantify how quickly exhumation proceeds, while the process itself describes the pathway.
Fission-track dating: A dating method that uses trails of radiation damage in minerals to infer age and thermal history. Track annealing can constrain cooling as rocks are exhumed through temperature windows.
Himalayan exhumation: The tectonically driven exposure of deeply buried rocks within the Himalayan mountain belt. The Himalaya show how collision, crustal flow, and erosion can exhume metamorphic rocks.
Rock uplift rate: The rate at which rock moves upward relative to a fixed reference datum. Rock uplift can occur without exposure if erosion does not remove the overburden.
Erosion: The detachment and transport of weathered material by water, wind, ice, or gravity. Erosion removes overlying material and exposes rocks raised toward the surface.
Unroofing: The removal of rock or sediment overlying a deeper geological unit. Unroofing names the removal component that allows buried rocks to become exposed.
Apatite helium dating: A thermochronologic method that estimates cooling histories from helium retention in apatite crystals. Helium retention constrains shallow cooling and the late stages of exhumation.
Alpine metamorphic core complexes: Exposed regions of deep crustal rocks in the Alps, brought upward during mountain building and extension. These exposures preserve rocks whose exhumation accompanied changing Alpine tectonics.
Surface uplift: The rise in Earth's land surface elevation relative to a fixed reference level. Surface elevation may rise without equivalent exhumation when rocks remain deeply buried.
