Explanation

An account that makes something understandable by clarifying its causes, reasons, meaning, or operation. Explanations differ in what they treat as needing clarification and what counts as an answer.

Causality: The relation between events or conditions in which one brings about or helps produce another. Causal explanations answer how an outcome was produced.
Mechanistic explanation: An explanation that identifies entities, activities, and their organization in producing a phenomenon. It makes operation intelligible by tracing how components work together.
Deductive-nomological model: A model of scientific explanation in which a phenomenon is deduced from laws and initial conditions. Its law-based account contrasts with approaches that require causal detail.
Explanatory model: A simplified representation used to show how or why a system or phenomenon behaves. Models make explanations tractable by selecting relevant features and relations.
Explanatory gap: The apparent gap between a physical account of a phenomenon and an explanation of its subjective character. It asks whether describing mechanisms can explain what experience feels like.
Reason: A consideration that supports a belief, decision, or action. Reasons explain why someone believes or does something without necessarily identifying a cause.
Scientific explanation: An account of a phenomenon grounded in scientific evidence, concepts, and methods. Scientific explanations connect observations to theories, models, or causal processes.
Causal-mechanical explanation: An explanation that describes the causal process and organized mechanisms producing a phenomenon. It prioritizes productive processes over deriving outcomes from general laws.
Scientific theory: A well-supported, coherent framework that explains and predicts phenomena in a scientific domain. Theories organize explanatory claims across many observations.
Why is there something rather than nothing?: A metaphysical question asking why anything exists instead of there being nothing. It tests whether every fact must have an explanation and whether explanation can reach ultimate reality.
