Explosive ordnance disposal

Explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) is the specialist detection, identification, evaluation, and neutralization of explosive hazards, including munitions, improvised devices, and explosive remnants of war.

Explosive ordnance reconnaissance: The systematic search and assessment of areas for explosive ordnance hazards. Reconnaissance locates suspected hazards and informs how specialists approach them.
Unexploded ordnance: A munition that was fired, dropped, launched, or placed but failed to explode as intended. Unexploded ordnance is a common hazard requiring specialist assessment and disposal.
Landmine clearance: The removal or destruction of mines and other explosive hazards from land. EOD specialists may address mines as part of clearance work.
Explosive ordnance disposal technician: A trained specialist who assesses and addresses explosive ordnance hazards. Technicians make the judgments and perform the work at the center of EOD.
