Explosive train

An explosive train is a sequence of energetic components that transfers initiation from a trigger to a main explosive charge, often amplifying a weak input into a reliable detonation.

Initiator: A device or material that begins an energetic event in response to an external stimulus. The train begins when the trigger activates this first energetic component.
Deflagration: Combustion that propagates through a material by heat transfer at subsonic speed. Some initiating components burn rather than detonate, making this distinction central to stage transitions.
Blasting cap: A small detonator used to initiate explosives in blasting operations. It is a familiar application of a staged initiation system.
Direct initiation: A design in which an initiating device acts directly on the principal explosive charge. It omits intermediate stages that characterize a conventional explosive train.
Detonator: A device that produces a detonation output to initiate another explosive component. It commonly supplies the transition from a low-energy trigger to a detonating stage.
Explosive material: A substance capable of a rapid energy-releasing reaction that produces heat, gas, or pressure. Each energetic stage is made from material whose reaction behavior governs its role.
Fuse: A device or material that conveys ignition or an initiating signal after a delay. Fuses can provide the timed trigger that starts an explosive train.
Detonation wave: The coupled shock-and-reaction front that travels through a detonating explosive. It distinguishes a sustained detonation output from simple ignition or burning.
Booster explosive: An intermediate explosive charge that strengthens an initiating output enough to detonate a larger charge. It bridges a detonator’s output and a less sensitive main charge.
Impact sensitivity: A measure of how readily an energetic material reacts when struck or subjected to impact. Sensitivity helps determine which materials can serve as early stages and which need stronger initiation.
