Knowra Exposure assessment Exposure assessment Exposure assessment estimates how much of a chemical, biological, or physical agent reaches people or other organisms, by which routes and for how long.
Exposure pathway : The sequence connecting an agent’s source to a receptor through environmental transport and contact. It lays out the source, route, and point of contact that an assessment must characterize.
Dose (biology) : The quantity of an agent administered to, received by, or absorbed into an organism. Dose connects estimated contact to the amount delivered to the body.
Human health risk assessment : A process for estimating the likelihood and severity of adverse health effects from a hazard under specified conditions. Exposure assessment supplies the contact estimates used to characterize health risks.
Exposure measurement error : The difference between an exposure measure and the true exposure quantity it is intended to represent. Sampling limits and imperfect proxies can systematically distort estimated contact.
Exposure route : The way an agent enters or contacts an organism, such as inhalation, ingestion, or skin absorption. Route determines which contact processes and measurements belong in the estimate.
Concentration : The amount of a substance present in a specified volume or mass of a mixture. Environmental concentration is often a measured input to exposure calculations.
Ecological risk assessment : A process for estimating the likelihood of adverse effects on organisms, populations, or ecosystems from environmental stressors. It applies exposure estimates to wildlife and ecosystems rather than only human populations.
Biomonitoring : The measurement of chemicals or their metabolites in biological specimens such as blood or urine. It measures internal concentrations, whereas exposure assessment may estimate contact before absorption.
Environmental monitoring : The systematic measurement of agents or environmental conditions over time and space. Measurements of air, water, soil, or food can anchor estimates of external exposure.
Bioavailability : The fraction of an agent that becomes available for absorption or biological action. It helps distinguish external contact from the portion that can enter the organism.
