Expulsion of the Chagossians

The forced removal of the Chagossian people from the Chagos Archipelago by the United Kingdom between 1968 and 1973 to make way for a U.S. military base on Diego Garcia.

British Indian Ocean Territory: A British overseas territory created in 1965 from the Chagos Archipelago and islands formerly belonging to Seychelles. Britain created this territory to retain control of the Chagos Archipelago after Mauritius gained independence.
United Kingdom–United States Chagos Agreement: A 1966 exchange of notes granting the United States use of the Chagos Archipelago for defense purposes. The agreement committed Britain to making the islands available without their existing population.
Chagos Archipelago sovereignty dispute: The dispute over sovereignty of the Chagos Archipelago, principally between Mauritius and the United Kingdom. The detachment that enabled the expulsion became the core of the continuing sovereignty dispute.
