Extensive farming

Extensive farming uses relatively little labor and capital per unit of land, relying on large areas to produce crops or livestock.

Land use: The ways people occupy, manage, and transform land for different purposes. Large holdings and low input density make land allocation central to this system.
Intensive farming: A farming system that uses high inputs of labor, capital, or technology per unit of land. It is the main counterpart, emphasizing greater inputs and output per area.
Ranching: The raising of grazing livestock on large areas of land. Ranching is a common extensive form of commercial livestock production.
Deforestation: The removal or lasting loss of forest cover, often through conversion to other land uses. Expanding extensive farms or pastures can convert forests into agricultural land.
Agricultural mechanization: The use of machinery to perform agricultural tasks that would otherwise require human or animal labor. Machinery can let farms manage wide areas with relatively few workers.
Subsistence agriculture: Agriculture conducted mainly to supply food and other necessities for the producing household or community. Extensive farms can be commercial; subsistence describes a production goal, not input intensity.
Pastoralism: A livelihood and production system centered on keeping and moving livestock. Mobile herding uses broad, variable grazing resources with comparatively few fixed inputs.
Overgrazing: Grazing pressure that exceeds vegetation recovery and degrades pasture or soil. Low stocking costs can encourage herd sizes that exceed local forage capacity.
Rangeland management: The planning and stewardship of land used mainly for grazing livestock and wildlife. Extensive livestock systems depend on sustaining forage across broad grazing areas.
Commercial agriculture: Agriculture organized primarily to produce goods for sale in markets. Extensive production can serve markets despite low inputs per unit of land.
