Extinction debt

Extinction debt is the future loss of species made likely by past environmental change, even though those species remain present for a time. It reflects a lag between habitat disruption and local or global extinction.

Relaxation time: The time a system takes to approach a new equilibrium after conditions change. Species populations can take decades or longer to approach the lower levels their altered habitat can support.
Habitat loss: The reduction or disappearance of natural habitat available to a species. It is a common environmental change that creates future risk while species may remain present.
