Extortion

Extortion is the unlawful acquisition of money, property, or action through threats, coercion, or abuse of authority. It differs from lawful bargaining because the demand relies on wrongful pressure.

Coercion: Coercion is the use of force, threats, or other pressure to make someone act against their will. It is the pressure that turns an extortionate demand into compelled action.
Threat: A threat is a communicated intention to cause harm or impose an adverse consequence. Threats can provide the leverage behind an extortionate demand.
Robbery: Robbery is the taking of property from a person or their presence through force or threat of immediate force. Robbery typically involves taking property directly, while extortion can rely on threats of later harm.

Chilling effect: A chilling effect occurs when threats of punishment or harm deter people from lawful speech or conduct. Extortion can silence victims or witnesses beyond the immediate demand.
