Eye protection

Eye protection is equipment that shields the eyes from hazards such as flying particles, chemicals, radiation, and infectious droplets.

Safety glasses: Protective eyewear with impact-resistant lenses, usually held in place by temples and a bridge. Their open-sided design suits impact hazards when full enclosure is unnecessary.
Chemical splash goggles: Goggles designed to reduce eye exposure to liquid chemical splashes. Their enclosed fit addresses hazards that can enter around ordinary safety glasses.
Polycarbonate: A transparent thermoplastic known for high impact resistance and use in protective lenses. Its impact resistance makes it a common lens material for safety eyewear.
Prescription eyeglasses: Eyewear with lenses prescribed to correct refractive errors or other focusing problems. Ordinary prescription lenses may not withstand impacts or protect against workplace hazards.
Safety goggles: Protective eyewear that encloses the eye area and seals or closely fits against the face. Their closer facial fit helps block splashes, dust, and airborne particles.
Welding helmet: A protective head covering with a viewing filter that shields against welding radiation and sparks. Welding helmets protect the eyes from intense arc radiation and flying material.
Ultraviolet filter: A material or optical coating that reduces transmission of ultraviolet radiation. Ultraviolet filtering protects against radiation that clear impact lenses may not block adequately.
Contact lens: A thin corrective or cosmetic lens worn directly on the surface of the eye. Contact lenses correct vision but provide no physical barrier against hazards.
Face shield: A transparent or mesh barrier worn over the face to protect it from hazards. It adds face coverage but is generally paired with eye protection rather than replacing it.
Laser safety glasses: Eyewear with optical filters designed to attenuate specified laser wavelengths. Laser filters must match the beam’s wavelength and required attenuation.
