Eyeliner

Eyeliner is a cosmetic applied along the eyelids or lash lines to define or accentuate the eyes. It comes in forms such as pencils, liquids, gels, and powders.

Kohl: A dark cosmetic traditionally made from mineral powders and used around the eyes. Kohl is an ancient form of eye lining, distinct from many modern formulations.
Eyelid: A movable fold of skin that covers and protects the front of the eye. Eyeliner is commonly applied to the eyelid or its edges.
Ancient Egyptian cosmetics: Cosmetic practices in ancient Egypt, including the use of dark eye paints. Archaeological evidence connects Egyptian eye cosmetics with early eyeliner traditions.
Eye pencil: A pencil-shaped cosmetic applicator used to deposit pigment around the eyes. It is one physical format for eyeliner, unlike liquid or brush-applied products.
Liquid eyeliner: An eyeliner formulation applied as a fluid, usually with a fine brush or felt tip. Its thin applicator supports precise lines and sharp wings.
Eyelashes: Short hairs growing along the edges of the eyelids. The lash line provides a common guide for eyeliner placement.
Mesopotamia: An ancient region in western Asia between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. Eye cosmetics were used in ancient Mesopotamian societies as well as Egypt.
Eyebrow pencil: A cosmetic pencil used to fill, shape, or define the eyebrows. It resembles eyeliner in format but is formulated and applied for brows.
Gel eyeliner: A creamy, pigmented eyeliner commonly applied with a brush. Its smooth texture offers more control than many liquid formulas.
Waterline (eye): The moist inner margin of an eyelid, adjacent to the eyeball. Some eyeliner techniques place pigment directly along this inner margin.
