FA Cup

The FA Cup is an annual knockout association football competition open to eligible clubs in England and Wales. Its open-entry format brings professional and non-league teams into the same tournament.

FA Cup qualifying rounds: Preliminary rounds through which many non-league clubs seek places in the FA Cup proper. They extend the competition to clubs outside the main draw.
Charles W. Alcock: English football administrator and player who proposed and organized the inaugural FA Cup competition. His proposal established the tournament in 1871.
Wimbledon F.C.: An English football club that defeated Liverpool to win the 1988 FA Cup final. Its victory stands among the competition’s best-known upsets.
Wembley Stadium: A national stadium in London that has hosted the FA Cup final since 1923, apart from interruptions. Its association with the final made it the cup’s symbolic venue.
FA Cup proper: The main draw of the FA Cup, beginning with the first round and culminating in the final. This is the tournament stage most commonly associated with the cup.
Football Association: The governing body of association football in England, founded in 1863. It founded and organizes the FA Cup.
Giant-killing (football): A football result in which a substantially weaker team defeats a stronger opponent. The FA Cup is especially associated with such upsets.
FA Cup prize money: Payments awarded to clubs for reaching specified rounds of the FA Cup. Cup progress can bring significant income, especially to smaller clubs.
FA Cup replays: Repeat matches historically used to resolve drawn FA Cup ties. Replay rules have changed how teams approach level knockout ties.
1871–72 FA Cup: The inaugural season of the Football Association Challenge Cup, played in 1871–72. Its first edition established the competition’s knockout format.
