Fabergé egg

A decorative egg-shaped object made by the House of Fabergé, often from precious materials and concealing a miniature surprise. The best-known examples were Easter gifts commissioned by Russia’s imperial family.

Hen Egg: The 1885 imperial Easter egg, with a white enamel shell that opens to reveal a gold yolk and a hen. Alexander III’s first imperial egg established the surprise-filled format.
Surprise (Fabergé egg): A miniature object or mechanism concealed inside some Fabergé eggs and revealed when they open. A hidden surprise turns the egg from ornament into a sequence of revelations.
Peter Carl Fabergé: The Russian jeweler who led the House of Fabergé and oversaw its most famous imperial commissions. His firm’s name became inseparable from the eggs made under his direction.

Coronation Egg: The 1897 imperial Easter egg, decorated with gold, diamonds, and translucent yellow enamel, containing a miniature coronation carriage. Its carriage links the gift to Nicholas II and Alexandra’s coronation.
Guilloché: A decorative pattern made by engraving precisely repeating lines into a surface, often beneath translucent enamel. Fabergé’s enamel surfaces often use this engraving to create depth and optical shimmer.
House of Fabergé: A Russian jewelry firm founded by Gustav Fabergé and later led by his son Peter Carl Fabergé. The eggs were products of a larger workshop employing specialized artisans.
Soviet sale of Romanov jewels: The Soviet government’s sale and dispersal of jewelry and other valuables taken from the former imperial family. Sales abroad scattered several eggs from their original collection.
Winter Egg: The 1913 imperial Easter egg designed by Alma Pihl, made from rock crystal, diamonds, and platinum. Its frost-like crystal carving shows how radically an egg’s materials could vary.
Cloisonné: An enameling technique that fills compartments formed by thin metal wires with colored glass paste. It offers a distinct way to divide color across jeweled and enamel objects.
