Face powder

Face powder is a finely milled cosmetic applied to the face to absorb oil, reduce shine, set makeup, or soften the appearance of skin.

Talc: A soft mineral used in cosmetics as an absorbent, lubricant, and powder base. Its smooth slip and oil absorption made it a traditional base for face powders.
Sebum: An oily substance produced by sebaceous glands that lubricates skin and hair. Face powder can absorb some surface sebum, which is a major source of facial shine.
Loose powder: A finely divided cosmetic powder sold without being compacted into a solid cake. Loose face powder is commonly dusted over makeup or applied selectively to oily areas.
Foundation (cosmetics): A complexion cosmetic applied to even skin tone and provide coverage. Foundation primarily supplies pigment and coverage, while face powder often focuses on shine control or setting.
Rice powder: A cosmetic powder made from rice starch and used to mattify or lighten the appearance of skin. Rice-based powders show how familiar household materials became face cosmetics in East Asia.
Mica: A group of sheet silicate minerals used in cosmetics to add shimmer and improve texture. Fine mica particles can lend face powder a subtle glow rather than a matte finish.
Light scattering: The redirection of light when it encounters particles or variations in a material. Powder particles scatter reflected light, which can soften the visibility of pores and uneven texture.
Pressed powder: Cosmetic powder compacted with binders into a portable solid cake. Pressed face powder makes application and touch-ups easier to control away from home.
Concealer: A pigmented cosmetic used to cover localized discoloration or blemishes. Concealer targets specific areas with coverage rather than treating the whole face’s surface shine.
Lead(II) carbonate: A white compound formerly used as a pigment and cosmetic skin whitener, despite its toxicity. Historical face powders sometimes used this poisonous whitening pigment to create a pale complexion.
