Facial tissue

A lightweight disposable paper sheet designed for wiping or blowing the nose and for other gentle facial care. It is softer and more absorbent than many papers used for general cleaning.

Papermaking: The industrial process of forming, pressing, and drying a web of cellulose fibers into paper. Facial tissue is made by forming cellulose fibers into an exceptionally light paper web.
Capillary action: The movement of liquid through narrow spaces caused by surface tension and interactions with surrounding surfaces. Small spaces among tissue fibers draw liquid into the sheet.
Common cold: A contagious viral infection of the upper respiratory tract that commonly causes a runny or congested nose. Nasal discharge during a cold is a frequent reason people use facial tissue.
Kimberly-Clark: An American consumer-goods company founded in 1872 that developed several widely used paper products. The company introduced Kleenex facial tissue as a consumer product.
Municipal solid waste: Discarded material collected from households and other community sources for disposal or recovery. Used facial tissues add to the stream of household paper waste.
Wood pulp: A fibrous material made by separating cellulose fibers from wood for use in paper products. Its fibers provide the tissue sheet’s basic structure and absorbency.
Hydrogen bond: An attraction involving a hydrogen atom bonded to an electronegative atom and another electronegative atom. Hydrogen bonding helps cellulose fibers cohere in the dry sheet.
Allergic rhinitis: Inflammation of the nasal lining caused by an allergic response, often producing sneezing and a runny nose. Repeated wiping during allergy symptoms makes softness especially relevant.
Kleenex: A brand of disposable facial tissue introduced by Kimberly-Clark in the early twentieth century. Its launch helped establish facial tissue as a household product.
Composting: The controlled biological decomposition of organic material into a soil amendment. Some clean, uncoated tissues can break down in suitable composting systems, subject to local rules.
