Faisal I of Iraq

Faisal I was king of Iraq from 1921 until his death in 1933. A Hashemite prince who led the Arab Revolt, he became the first ruler of Iraq under British mandate.

Arab Revolt: An uprising against Ottoman rule in the Hejaz during the First World War, led by Sharif Hussein’s sons and supported by Britain. Faisal commanded Arab forces in the revolt, gaining standing that shaped his later claims to rule.
Anglo-Iraqi Treaty of 1922: A treaty that formalized British influence over Iraq while recognizing its government under Faisal. It defined the unequal relationship between the king’s government and Britain.
Hussein bin Ali, King of Hejaz: Sharif of Mecca and king of the Hejaz who led the Arab Revolt and was father of Faisal I. His father’s revolt and ambitions for Arab unity framed Faisal’s political career.
King Ghazi of Iraq: Faisal’s son and successor, who ruled Iraq from 1933 until his death in 1939. Ghazi inherited the throne and the state-building challenges Faisal left unresolved.

Abdullah I of Jordan: The first king of Jordan, a Hashemite prince and Faisal’s elder brother. The brothers received neighboring thrones after the collapse of Faisal’s Syrian kingdom.
Iraqi nationalism: A political movement advocating a distinct Iraqi national identity and sovereignty. Faisal promoted an Iraqi identity to bind communities within a recently formed state.
Kingdom of Syria: A short-lived Arab kingdom ruled by Faisal in 1920 before French forces ended its government. The loss of this kingdom redirected Faisal from Damascus to the Iraqi throne.
1925 Constitution of Iraq: Iraq’s first constitution, establishing a hereditary monarchy and a bicameral parliament under Faisal. It gave formal institutions to the state Faisal sought to consolidate.
