Falaise Pocket

The encirclement of German forces around Falaise, France, by Allied armies in August 1944. Its closure helped destroy much of Germany’s remaining strength in Normandy, though many troops escaped eastward.

Operation Tractable: A Canadian offensive launched on 14 August 1944 to advance toward Falaise. Its advance from the north helped narrow the encirclement around German forces.
Operation Cobra: A United States offensive launched on 25 July 1944 that broke through German lines in Normandy. Its breakthrough let Allied forces move rapidly behind German positions.
Bernard Montgomery: A British field marshal who commanded Allied ground forces during the early Battle of Normandy. His operational direction framed the Allied advances toward the encirclement.
