Fall of Singapore

The Japanese capture of Singapore from British and Commonwealth forces on 15 February 1942. It was the largest surrender of British-led forces in history.

Malayan Campaign: The Japanese invasion and conquest of British Malaya from December 1941 to January 1942. Its rapid overland advance brought Japanese forces to Singapore’s northern shore.
Arthur Percival: A British general who commanded Allied forces in Malaya and Singapore during the Japanese invasion. He led the defense and surrendered the island to Japanese forces.
Singapore strategy: Britain’s prewar plan to defend Singapore with a major naval base and a fleet sent from Europe. The strategy depended on reinforcements that were unavailable when Japan attacked.

Sook Ching massacre: The 1942 Japanese mass killing of suspected anti-Japanese Chinese civilians in Singapore and Malaya. The occupation brought mass screenings and executions of Chinese residents.
Battle of Slim River: A January 1942 battle in which Japanese forces broke through British defenses in Malaya using tanks and surprise. The breakthrough accelerated the retreat down the peninsula.
Gordon Bennett: An Australian general who commanded the 8th Australian Division during the Malayan Campaign and defense of Singapore. His division bore much of the fighting on Singapore’s western front.
