Fallopian tube

One of two ducts that carry eggs from the ovaries toward the uterus. Fertilization usually occurs within a fallopian tube.

Fimbria: A fringe of fingerlike projections at the end of a fallopian tube near an ovary. Fimbriae help sweep an ovulated egg into the tube.
Ovary: A reproductive organ that produces oocytes and hormones such as estrogen and progesterone. The nearby ovary releases the egg that the tube captures.
Ectopic pregnancy: A pregnancy in which an embryo implants outside the uterine cavity. Most ectopic pregnancies occur in a fallopian tube.
Tubal factor infertility: Infertility caused by blockage or damage to the uterine tubes. Scarring can prevent sperm, eggs, or embryos from traveling through the tube.
Vas deferens: A muscular duct that transports sperm from the epididymis toward the ejaculatory duct. It transports sperm, unlike the fallopian tube’s transport of eggs and embryos.
Cilia: Microscopic hairlike cell projections that move fluid or material along a surface. Cilia lining the tube help move the egg toward the uterus.
Ovulation: The release of a mature oocyte from an ovarian follicle. Ovulation supplies the egg that enters the fallopian tube.
Tubal ligation: A surgical method of permanent contraception that blocks or interrupts the uterine tubes. It prevents sperm and eggs from meeting by interrupting tubal passage.
Pelvic inflammatory disease: An infection of the upper female reproductive tract, often involving the uterus and uterine tubes. Infection can scar the tubes and increase risks of infertility and ectopic pregnancy.
Cervix: The lower, narrow part of the uterus that opens into the vagina. The cervix connects uterus to vagina; the tubes connect uterus to the ovaries.
