Fallow

Fallow is farmland left uncultivated for a period, often to restore soil fertility, conserve moisture, or control weeds and pests.

Soil fertility: The capacity of soil to supply nutrients and support plant growth. Leaving land uncropped can let nutrients recover, though outcomes depend on soil and management.
Crop rotation: The planned succession of different crops on the same land over time. Fallow may occupy a scheduled phase in a rotation between harvested crops.
Soil conservation: Practices that prevent soil loss and maintain or improve soil condition. Managed fallow can aid recovery, while protective cover determines whether it conserves soil.
Conservation tillage: Tillage practices that reduce soil disturbance and retain crop residues on the field. Conservation tillage grows crops while limiting disturbance; fallow leaves the field without a crop.
Soil organic matter: Carbon-based material in soil derived from decomposed organisms and their remains. Plant residues and roots can build organic matter during vegetated fallow.
Dryland farming: Crop production in regions where rainfall is limited and irrigation is absent or scarce. In dry regions, fallow can store precipitation for a crop planted in a later season.
Desertification: Land degradation in dry regions caused by climatic variation and human activities. Poorly managed bare fallow can worsen degradation by exposing dry soil to wind and water.
No-till farming: A farming system that plants crops without plowing or otherwise tilling the soil. No-till keeps land in crop production rather than setting it aside.
Soil moisture: Water held in soil pores and available to plants or other processes. A bare fallow may conserve water for a later crop, but evaporation can also deplete it.
Shifting cultivation: A farming system in which fields are cultivated temporarily and then left to recover as cultivation moves elsewhere. Fallow periods are central to traditional shifting cultivation systems.
