Family saga

A narrative tracing the lives and relationships of multiple generations within a family. It often follows how inheritance, conflict, and historical change shape the family over time.

Generational novel: A novel that follows successive generations, often showing how family history shapes descendants. This closely related form makes the passage between generations the story’s organizing principle.
The Forsyte Saga: John Galsworthy’s sequence of novels and interludes about an affluent English family from the Victorian era onward. Its title and multi-generational scope became a defining example of the form.
Family novel: A novel centered on family relationships, which may cover one generation or a limited period. A family novel need not trace a lineage across multiple generations.
