Fan art

Fan art is artwork created by fans that depicts or reimagines characters, settings, or other elements from existing works or public figures.

Fan fiction: Fiction written by fans using characters, settings, or worlds from existing works. It is a parallel form of fan creativity that often shares characters and communities with fan art.
Copyright: A legal system granting creators exclusive rights over specified uses of their original works. Existing characters and settings may be protected by copyright even when fans draw them.
Fanzine: A nonprofessional magazine produced by fans, often devoted to a shared interest or fictional work. Fanzines gave fans an early print medium for sharing illustrations and other creative work.
Official art: Artwork authorized or commissioned by the owners or producers of a work or franchise. Unlike official art, fan art is made independently of the rights holder's authorization.
Cosplay: The practice of making and wearing costumes to portray characters from fiction or popular culture. Cosplay turns visual interpretations of characters into embodied performance.
Derivative work: A new work based on or adapted from one or more preexisting works. Fan art can be legally classified as derivative when it draws on protected expression.
Science fiction fandom: A community of enthusiasts and creators organized around science fiction literature and culture. Its print culture helped establish practices that later fan art communities adopted.
Original character: A character created by an artist or writer rather than taken from an existing work. Fan art typically draws on established characters, while original characters originate with their creators.
Redraw challenge: An art challenge in which participants recreate an image in their own styles. It shows how fans reinterpret existing images through a shared prompt.
Fair use: A United States legal doctrine permitting certain uses of copyrighted material without permission. It can limit copyright claims against some fan artworks, depending on specific circumstances.
