Gothic fiction : Fiction emphasizing terror, decay, mystery, and the supernatural, often in oppressive settings. Gothic writing helped shape fantasy’s darker supernatural and atmospheric modes.
Magical realism : A literary mode that presents extraordinary events as ordinary within a realistic setting. It usually retains a recognizable real world rather than building a separate fantasy realm.
