Farad

The farad is the SI unit of electrical capacitance, equal to one coulomb per volt. It measures how much electric charge a capacitor stores per unit of potential difference.

Electrical capacitance: The ability of a system to store electric charge for a given potential difference. Capacitance is the quantity measured in farads.
Capacitor: An electrical component that stores energy in an electric field between conductors. A capacitor's capacitance, expressed in farads, relates its stored charge to voltage.
Microfarad: A unit of capacitance equal to one millionth of a farad. Microfarads are common for capacitors in electronic circuits.
Michael Faraday: An English experimental physicist and chemist whose discoveries established key principles of electromagnetism and electrochemistry. The farad is named in honor of Faraday's contributions to electromagnetism.
Coulomb: The SI unit of electric charge, equal to the charge transported by one ampere in one second. One farad stores one coulomb when the voltage across it is one volt.
Parallel-plate capacitor: A capacitor made from two parallel conductive plates separated by an insulating gap. Its geometry makes the relation between capacitance, plate area, and spacing explicit.
Picofarad: A unit of capacitance equal to one trillionth of a farad. Picofarads describe the small capacitances often found in radio-frequency circuits.
International System of Units: The globally adopted system of measurement units, abbreviated SI. The farad is the SI derived unit for capacitance.
Volt: The SI unit of electric potential difference, equal to one joule per coulomb. Voltage is the denominator in the farad's definition, coulombs per volt.
Dielectric: An electrical insulator that polarizes in an applied electric field. A dielectric changes the capacitance a capacitor can provide in farads.
