Fate

Fate is a power or order that determines events beyond human control. It can be understood as divine decree, cosmic necessity, or an impersonal chain of causes.

Free will: The capacity of agents to choose among alternatives in ways that are not wholly predetermined. Its tension with fate asks whether human choices can genuinely alter what happens.
Oedipus Rex: A tragedy by Sophocles in which Oedipus fulfills a prophecy despite attempts to avoid it. The play makes efforts to escape a foretold destiny the cause of its fulfillment.
Moira: In ancient Greek thought, a share or allotment that determines a person's portion in life. The concept names an early Greek way of describing each person's allotted destiny.
Chance: The occurrence of events without a predictable or intended determining cause. Chance contrasts with fate by denying that an event follows an ordained order.
Moral responsibility: The status of being appropriately answerable for actions and their consequences. If events are fixed, the grounds for praise, blame, and accountability become contested.
Fatalism: The doctrine that outcomes will occur regardless of actions taken to prevent them. It turns belief in fate into a claim that efforts cannot change an outcome.
Norns: Female figures in Norse mythology associated with shaping the destinies of gods and humans. They show a distinct mythic tradition imagining destiny as woven by supernatural beings.
Stoicism: A Hellenistic philosophy teaching that virtue and clear judgment enable life in accordance with nature. Stoics treated the cosmos as ordered by necessity and urged acceptance of what follows.
Prophecy: A declaration presented as divine or supernatural communication about events or truth. A prophecy reveals or announces an outcome but does not itself determine it.
The problem of evil: The challenge of reconciling evil and suffering with an all-powerful, all-knowing, and perfectly good God. A divinely ordered fate raises questions about why suffering is permitted.
