Fatima

Fatima was the daughter of Muhammad and Khadija, the wife of Ali, and the mother of Hasan and Husayn. Muslims revere her, and the Fatimid dynasty traced its descent to her.

Muhammad: The religious, political, and social leader who founded Islam in seventh-century Arabia. Fatima was his daughter and one of the closest members of his household.
Fatima al-Zahra: An honorific name for Fatima meaning “the radiant” or “the shining one.” This title conveys the reverence attached to her in Muslim devotional traditions.
Fadak: An oasis estate in Arabia whose ownership became disputed after Muhammad’s death. Fatima’s claim to Fadak became a defining episode in accounts of her later life.
Battle of Karbala: The 680 battle in which Husayn ibn Ali and his companions were killed by forces of the Umayyad caliph Yazid I. The death of Fatima’s son Husayn became a defining event in Shia remembrance.
Khadija: The first wife of Muhammad and an early supporter of his prophetic mission. She was Fatima’s mother.
Ahl al-Bayt: The household of Muhammad, whose membership and religious significance are understood differently across Muslim traditions. Fatima is central to the household’s family line and devotional importance.
Succession to Muhammad: The dispute over who should lead the Muslim community after Muhammad’s death in 632. The succession dispute shaped the political setting of Fatima’s final years.
Mourning of Muharram: Rituals and gatherings commemorating Husayn ibn Ali’s death during the Islamic month of Muharram. These rites remember the loss of Fatima’s family at Karbala.
Ali: The fourth Sunni caliph and the first Shia imam, who was Muhammad’s cousin and son-in-law. His marriage to Fatima joined two branches of Muhammad’s family.
Shia Islam: The branch of Islam that holds Ali and his descendants to be the rightful leaders of the Muslim community. Fatima’s descendants are central to Shia accounts of religious authority.
