Knowra Federation of Malaya Federation of Malaya The Federation of Malaya was an independent state formed on 31 August 1957 from the Malay Peninsula’s former British territories. It became part of Malaysia in 1963.
Malayan Union : A British-administered political union established in 1946 that brought most Malay states and the Straits Settlements under centralized rule. Opposition to this postwar union helped drive the political settlement that replaced it.
Constitution of the Federation of Malaya : The 1957 constitution that established Malaya’s federal institutions, citizenship rules, and system of constitutional monarchy. It set the legal framework for the new state.
Tunku Abdul Rahman : The leader of the Alliance Party and Malaya’s first prime minister, who negotiated independence from Britain. He led the government that secured independence in 1957.
Malaysia Agreement : The 1963 agreement that established Malaysia by combining Malaya, Singapore, Sabah, and Sarawak. It provided the framework for Malaya’s union with the Borneo territories and Singapore.
Federation of Malaya Agreement 1948 : The agreement that established the Federation of Malaya as a British-protected federation on 1 February 1948. It created the pre-independence federation that became sovereign in 1957.
Yang di-Pertuan Agong : The elected federal monarch of Malaysia, chosen for a five-year term from among the nine hereditary Malay rulers. The constitution made the rulers’ council elect a federal head of state.
Onn Jaafar : A Malay political leader who founded UMNO in 1946 and later formed the Independence of Malaya Party. His campaign against the Malayan Union helped shape the federation’s political origins.
Malaysia : A Southeast Asian federation established in 1963, initially comprising Malaya, Singapore, Sabah, and Sarawak. The Federation of Malaya became the central component of this larger federation.
Malayan Emergency : An armed conflict in Malaya from 1948 to 1960 between British and Commonwealth forces and communist insurgents. The insurgency shaped security policy and the timing of constitutional negotiations.
Conference of Rulers : A body of Malaysia’s hereditary rulers and governors that performs constitutional and ceremonial functions, including electing the federal monarch. It carried the rulers’ collective role into the federation’s constitutional system.
