Felix Hausdorff

Felix Hausdorff (1868–1942) was a German mathematician and philosopher whose work shaped set theory and topology. His 1914 book Grundzüge der Mengenlehre helped establish general topology, including the separation property now named the Hausdorff condition.

Set theory: The mathematical study of sets, their elements, and relations between collections. Hausdorff used set-theoretic methods to formulate general spaces and investigate infinite collections.
Hausdorff space: A topological space in which any two distinct points have disjoint open neighborhoods. This separation property is the condition most directly associated with Hausdorff’s name.
Georg Cantor: A German mathematician who founded set theory and developed the theory of infinite cardinalities. Cantor’s work on infinity formed a major intellectual foundation for Hausdorff’s research.
