Felix Klein

Felix Klein (1849–1925) was a German mathematician whose work connected geometry with group theory. His Erlangen program classified geometries by the transformations that preserve their properties.

Erlangen program: A 1872 proposal to classify geometries by the transformation groups that preserve their defining properties. Klein’s best-known framework made symmetry groups the basis for comparing geometries.
Sophus Lie: A Norwegian mathematician who founded the theory of continuous transformation groups. Lie’s groups supplied a powerful algebraic counterpart to the geometries Klein sought to classify.
Julius Plücker: A German mathematician whose work on line geometry and analytic geometry influenced nineteenth-century mathematics. Klein studied under Plücker and continued his work on line geometry after Plücker’s death.
Klein bottle: A closed non-orientable surface that cannot be embedded in three-dimensional Euclidean space without self-intersection. This surface bears Klein’s name and embodies the topological questions explored by nineteenth-century geometry.
Riemannian geometry: The study of manifolds equipped with smoothly varying inner products on their tangent spaces. Metric and curvature structures are not always captured by a single global symmetry group.
Transformation group: A group whose elements act as transformations on a space while preserving its structure. Klein used transformation groups to specify which properties define each geometry.
Lie group: A group that is also a smooth manifold, with smooth multiplication and inversion. Continuous symmetry groups connect Klein’s geometric viewpoint to modern geometry and physics.
Alfred Clebsch: A German mathematician known for contributions to algebraic geometry and invariant theory. Klein worked with Clebsch in Göttingen, where their collaboration shaped his early research.
Klein quartic: A genus-three Riemann surface with an exceptionally large group of conformal automorphisms. Klein studied this surface as a striking meeting point of geometry, complex analysis, and symmetry.
Cartan geometry: A geometric structure modeled locally on a homogeneous space, generalized through a connection. Cartan geometry extends Klein’s homogeneous-space viewpoint to spaces that are not globally homogeneous.
