Knowra Ferdinand Cohn Ferdinand Cohn Ferdinand Cohn (1828–1898) was a German botanist and microbiologist who helped establish bacteriology and showed that some bacteria form heat-resistant spores.
Bacteriology : The branch of microbiology concerned with bacteria, including their biology, classification, and effects. Cohn helped establish bacteriology through systematic study and classification of bacteria.
Endospore germination : The process by which a dormant bacterial endospore resumes growth as a vegetative cell. Cohn described spores as stages in a bacterium’s life cycle, not separate organisms.
Ferdinand Julius Cohn : An alternative expanded name sometimes used for Ferdinand Cohn, the nineteenth-century German botanist and microbiologist. This expanded form appears in biographical references to the same scientist.
Botany : The scientific study of plants, including their structure, growth, classification, and relationships. Cohn began as a botanist and brought botanical classification into the study of microorganisms.
Bacterial endospore : A dormant, highly resistant structure formed inside certain bacteria, allowing survival under harsh conditions. Cohn showed that some bacteria survive heat by forming resistant spores.
Bacillus subtilis : A soil-dwelling, spore-forming bacterium widely used in microbiology and biotechnology. Cohn studied this bacterium and documented its spore formation and development.
Louis Pasteur : A French chemist and microbiologist whose experiments helped establish germ theory and develop microbial processes. Pasteur’s research on heat and microbes addressed questions that Cohn’s spore findings also shaped.
Microscopy : The use of instruments to observe structures too small to be seen clearly with the unaided eye. Microscopic observation let Cohn distinguish bacterial forms and follow their development.
Robert Koch : A German physician and microbiologist who established methods for identifying disease-causing bacteria. Koch’s bacteriological work developed in the scientific tradition Cohn helped establish.
Bacterial life cycle : The stages through which bacteria grow, reproduce, and, in some species, enter dormancy. Cohn interpreted spore formation as part of bacterial development.
