Ferdinand de Lesseps

Ferdinand de Lesseps (1805–1894) was a French diplomat and canal promoter who led the Suez Canal project and the failed French effort to build the Panama Canal.

Suez Canal: An artificial waterway in Egypt connecting the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea. Lesseps led the company that built this successful canal, establishing his reputation as a canal promoter.
Sea-level canal: A canal built without locks, with water kept near the level of the sea at both entrances. Lesseps insisted on this design in Panama, despite the route’s steep terrain and heavy rainfall.
French consulate in Alexandria: A French diplomatic post in Alexandria, Egypt, where Ferdinand de Lesseps served as consul in the 1830s. His Egyptian posting brought him into contact with the region and its rulers before the Suez project.
John Frank Stevens: An American civil engineer who directed Panama Canal construction from 1905 to 1907. Stevens reorganized the work around railways, sanitation, and a lock canal rather than Lesseps’s sea-level scheme.

Chagres River: A major river in Panama whose watershed supplies water to the Panama Canal and its lakes. Its floods complicated French excavation and later became central to the lock-based canal.
