Ferdinand Georg Frobenius

Ferdinand Georg Frobenius (1849–1917) was a German mathematician whose work helped establish the character theory of finite groups and advanced the theory of differential equations.

Finite group: A group with finitely many elements and a binary operation satisfying the group axioms. Finite groups are the objects whose representations and characters Frobenius helped systematize.
Induced representation: A representation of a group constructed from a representation of one of its subgroups. Induction became a key method in Frobenius’s approach to representations.
Richard Dedekind: A German mathematician who made foundational contributions to algebraic number theory and abstract algebra. Dedekind’s work on group characters and algebraic structures formed part of Frobenius’s intellectual setting.
Frobenius group: A finite group with a proper subgroup whose nonidentity elements fix no points outside its own fixed-point set. Frobenius’s study of permutation groups led to this class of groups bearing his name.
University of Berlin: A Berlin university founded in 1810 and later renamed Humboldt University of Berlin. Frobenius studied and taught at this institution during key stages of his career.
Group representation: A homomorphism from a group to the invertible linear transformations of a vector space. Frobenius studied groups through their actions on vector spaces.
Induced character: The character of a representation induced from a subgroup to a larger group. Frobenius used induced characters to build and analyze characters of finite groups.
Issai Schur: A German mathematician whose work established major results in representation theory and algebra. Schur extended the representation theory Frobenius had helped found.
Frobenius kernel: The normal subgroup in a finite Frobenius group consisting of the identity and elements fixing no points. The kernel emerged from Frobenius’s analysis of finite groups acting on sets.
Humboldt University of Berlin: A public research university in Berlin, founded in 1810 as the University of Berlin. The institution now bearing this name was central to Frobenius’s academic life.
