Ferdinand III of Castile

Ferdinand III ruled Castile from 1217 and León from 1230 until his death in 1252. He united the two kingdoms and expanded Christian rule across much of southern Iberia.

Conquest of Córdoba: The 1236 capture of Córdoba by Ferdinand III’s forces during the Christian advance into al-Andalus. The city’s fall marked a major step in Ferdinand’s conquest of the Guadalquivir valley.
Berengaria of Castile: Queen of Castile who abdicated in 1217 and transferred the crown to her son Ferdinand III. Her transfer of the Castilian crown brought Ferdinand to power.
Alfonso X of Castile: King of Castile and León from 1252 to 1284 and son and successor of Ferdinand III. His succession continued the dynasty and royal union Ferdinand established.

Beatrice of Swabia: Queen of Castile and wife of Ferdinand III, whose marriage connected the Castilian dynasty to the Hohenstaufen family. Their marriage linked Ferdinand’s family to imperial Europe.
University of Salamanca: A Spanish university whose origins lie in the educational institution established at Salamanca in the early thirteenth century. Ferdinand’s reign saw royal support for the school that later became a university.
Siege of Jaén: The 1246 surrender of Jaén to Ferdinand III, secured through a treaty with Muhammad I of Granada. Its settlement helped establish Granada’s tributary relationship with Castile.
Treaty of Benavente: The 1230 agreement that secured the transfer of the Leonese crown to Ferdinand III. The agreement helped resolve the succession dispute that enabled the kingdoms’ union.
