Ferdinand Lassalle

Ferdinand Lassalle (1825–1864) was a German socialist politician and writer who founded the General German Workers’ Association, a forerunner of Germany’s Social Democratic Party.

Revolutions of 1848 in the German states: A wave of liberal and nationalist uprisings that challenged the German Confederation and its monarchies in 1848–1849. The failed revolutions shaped Lassalle’s political generation and his later strategy for workers’ organization.
Iron law of wages: A classical economic doctrine holding that wages tend toward the minimum needed for workers’ subsistence. Lassalle used this doctrine to argue that isolated wage bargaining could not secure lasting improvement.

State socialism: A political approach that uses state action to promote social ownership or improve workers’ conditions. Lassalle advocated state-backed productive associations rather than relying on private charity or laissez-faire.
