Ferdinand Magellan

Ferdinand Magellan was a Portuguese navigator who led a Spanish expedition seeking a westward route to the Spice Islands. He died in the Philippines in 1521; survivors completed the first circumnavigation of Earth in 1522.

Kingdom of Portugal: A European maritime kingdom that built an overseas empire through exploration, trade, and conquest. Magellan served Portugal before seeking Spanish backing for his westward voyage.
Strait of Magellan: A navigable sea passage through southern Chile connecting the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Magellan’s fleet found and traversed this passage to reach the Pacific.
Juan Sebastián Elcano: A Basque navigator who commanded Victoria on its return to Spain after Magellan’s death. Elcano led the surviving crew that completed the expedition’s circumnavigation.
First circumnavigation: The 1519–1522 voyage that first carried a crew around Earth, completed by survivors of Magellan’s expedition. The expedition’s defining outcome was achieved after Magellan’s death, under Elcano’s command.
Charles I of Spain: King of Spain from 1516 and Holy Roman Emperor as Charles V from 1519. He sponsored Magellan’s expedition and authorized its search for a western route to the Spice Islands.
Victoria (ship): The only ship of Magellan’s fleet to complete the voyage around the world. Its return to Spain carried the expedition’s surviving crew and completed the circumnavigation.
Antonio Pigafetta: An Italian participant in Magellan’s expedition whose journal is a major account of the voyage. His detailed narrative preserves observations of the voyage, its peoples, and its hardships.
Antonio de Herrera y Tordesillas: A Spanish historian whose official history of the Indies recounted the early Spanish overseas empire. His accounts helped shape later Spanish narratives of Magellan’s expedition and its imperial significance.
Treaty of Tordesillas: A 1494 agreement dividing newly claimed overseas territories between Spain and Portugal along a meridian. Its contested division of the globe shaped Spain’s interest in reaching Asian spices from the west.
Trinidad (ship): The flagship of Magellan’s expedition, which attempted to return across the Pacific after reaching the Spice Islands. Magellan commanded this vessel; its failed eastward return contrasts with Victoria’s successful westward passage.
