Ferenc Molnár

Ferenc Molnár (1878–1952) was a Hungarian playwright and novelist whose works combine urban settings, theatrical artifice, and psychological observation. His best-known plays include Liliom and The Guardsman.

Liliom: A 1909 play by Ferenc Molnár about a carnival barker whose life and death lead to a supernatural reckoning. This play became Molnár’s best-known work and later inspired the musical Carousel.
Play within a play: A dramatic structure in which characters perform or discuss another theatrical work inside the main play. Molnár uses embedded performance to make staged identity part of the action.
Budapest: The capital and largest city of Hungary, situated on the Danube River. Molnár’s urban settings draw on the social life of the city where he grew up.
