Ferrite

Ferrite is the body-centered cubic form of nearly pure iron, stable at ordinary temperatures and capable of dissolving only small amounts of carbon.

Iron–carbon phase diagram: A diagram showing the stable phases of iron–carbon alloys across temperatures and compositions. It maps the conditions under which ferrite forms and coexists with other phases.
Ferrite–pearlite transformation: The decomposition of austenite into ferrite and pearlite during steel cooling. It describes a common route by which ferrite develops in carbon steels.
Low-carbon steel: Steel with a relatively small carbon content, typically valued for formability and weldability. Its microstructure commonly contains ferrite, which contributes softness and ductility.
Ferrite core: A magnetic core made from ceramic ferrite compounds, usually oxides of iron mixed with other metals. Despite the shared name, ferrite cores are ceramic compounds, not the metallic iron phase.
Body-centered cubic: A cubic crystal structure with atoms at each corner and one at the cube’s center. This lattice distinguishes ferrite from the face-centered cubic structure of austenite.
Pearlite: A layered microstructure of ferrite and cementite formed from austenite. Ferrite forms the softer layers of this characteristic steel microstructure.
Ferritic stainless steel: A family of chromium-containing stainless steels with a predominantly ferritic structure. These steels retain ferrite as their main phase and are used where corrosion resistance is needed.
Delta ferrite: The high-temperature body-centered cubic iron phase stable near iron’s melting point. It shares ferrite’s crystal structure but forms at high temperatures rather than ordinary conditions.
Carbon in iron: The ways carbon occupies or combines with iron in iron–carbon materials. Ferrite’s low carbon solubility limits how much carbon its lattice can accommodate.
Cementite: The iron carbide Fe₃C, a hard and brittle phase in many steels. Ferrite rejects excess carbon that can combine with iron to form cementite.
