Ferrocene

Ferrocene is an organometallic compound with an iron atom between two parallel cyclopentadienyl rings. Its sandwich structure gives it unusual stability and distinctive aromatic chemistry.

Sandwich compound: An organometallic compound in which a metal lies between two planar or nearly planar ligand frameworks. Ferrocene is the archetypal example of this structural family.
Discovery of ferrocene: The 1951 recognition of an unusually stable iron–hydrocarbon compound independently prepared by two research groups. The compound's unexpected properties prompted the structural puzzle that launched its fame.
Ferrocenyl compounds: Compounds containing a ferrocene unit attached to another molecular group. Ferrocene's rings can be functionalized to create catalysts, ligands, and molecular materials.

Asymmetric catalysis: Catalysis that preferentially produces one stereoisomer of a chiral product. Chiral ferrocenyl ligands help control selectivity in several transition-metal catalysts.
Nickelocene: A nickel sandwich compound with two cyclopentadienyl rings and a 20-electron configuration. Its electron count and magnetic behavior differ from ferrocene's 18-electron closed-shell structure.
Hapticity: The number of contiguous atoms in a ligand that bind to a metal center. Each ring binds through all five carbon atoms, described as η⁵ coordination.
Peter L. Pauson: A Scottish chemist whose research included the early preparation and characterization of ferrocene. Pauson co-discovered ferrocene and initially proposed a structure later revised.
