Fibroblast

A connective-tissue cell that produces and maintains extracellular components, including collagen and other fibers. Fibroblasts also help organize tissue repair and shape the local cellular environment.

Extracellular matrix: The network of proteins and other molecules surrounding cells that provides structural and biochemical support. Fibroblasts produce and remodel this surrounding network.
Wound healing: The biological process that restores tissue integrity after injury. Fibroblasts contribute matrix and contractile force during the repair sequence.
Connective tissue: A tissue class in which cells are embedded in an extracellular matrix that supports, connects, or separates other tissues. Fibroblasts are characteristic matrix-producing cells of many connective tissues.
Fibrocyte: A circulating bone-marrow-derived cell that can enter tissues and express markers associated with connective-tissue cells. Unlike resident fibroblasts, fibrocytes circulate before entering injured tissue.
Collagen: A family of structural proteins that forms fibers and supplies tensile strength to tissues. Fibroblasts synthesize collagen, a major load-bearing component of connective tissue.
Granulation tissue: New vascular connective tissue that fills a wound during healing. Fibroblasts populate this temporary tissue and deposit its matrix.
Stroma: The supportive framework of an organ, including connective tissue, vessels, and associated cells. Fibroblasts commonly form a major cellular part of organ stroma.
Smooth muscle cell: A contractile cell that lines hollow organs and blood vessels and regulates their diameter or movement. Both can contract, but smooth muscle cells primarily regulate organ and vessel function.
Fibronectin: An extracellular glycoprotein that binds cells and matrix components and helps organize tissue structure. Fibroblasts secrete fibronectin to organize matrix and support cell attachment.
Scar: Fibrous tissue that replaces normal tissue after injury or disease. Persistent fibroblast activity can leave collagen-rich scar tissue.
