FIDE

FIDE is the International Chess Federation, the organization that governs international chess and coordinates national chess federations. It awards official titles, maintains ratings, and organizes major world championships.

World Chess Championship: The match that determines the undisputed classical chess world champion. FIDE has overseen the official world championship cycle since the title’s establishment.
FIDE Laws of Chess: The rules published by FIDE for competitive chess, including moves, clocks, and tournament conduct. They provide a shared rules framework for competitions FIDE sanctions.
Paris 1924 chess tournament: An international chess tournament held during the 1924 Paris Olympics, alongside the founding of FIDE. The tournament and its participants provided the setting for FIDE’s creation.
Alexander Alekhine: A Russian-born French chess player who held the world championship title from 1927 until his death in 1946. His death left the title vacant and prompted FIDE to organize a succession process.
Professional Chess Association: An organization founded by Garry Kasparov and Nigel Short to organize their 1993 world championship match. It offered a rival championship structure outside FIDE’s authority.
FIDE World Cup: A large knockout chess tournament that awards places in the Candidates Tournament. It is one of FIDE’s principal routes into the world championship cycle.
Elo rating system: A statistical method for estimating relative player strength from competitive results. FIDE uses Elo-based calculations to produce its international player ratings.
Alexander Rueb: A Dutch chess organizer who became FIDE’s first president. His leadership helped establish the federation after its 1924 founding.
Max Euwe: A Dutch chess grandmaster who became world champion in 1935 and later led FIDE. As FIDE president, he helped the organization manage the world championship system.
Classical World Chess Championship: The lineage of world championship matches traditionally associated with the strongest match-play title. After 1993, its title lineage competed with the FIDE world championship.
