Knowra Field trial Field trial A judged competition in which hunting dogs demonstrate their working abilities under simulated field conditions. Events assess skills such as finding game, pointing, retrieving, or tracking.
Hunt test : A standardized assessment of a dog’s hunting skills, usually judged against a performance standard rather than ranked against competitors. Unlike field trials, hunt tests generally reward meeting a standard instead of beating other entries.
Gundog : A dog bred or trained to assist hunters by finding, flushing, pointing, or retrieving game. Field trials are competitive tests of selected gundog abilities.
American Kennel Club field trials : Competitions governed by the American Kennel Club that test dogs’ hunting-related abilities under defined rules. These trials provide a prominent United States rule system for several kinds of hunting dogs.

Bird dog : A hunting dog trained to locate, flush, point, or retrieve game birds. Many field-trial formats focus on the work of bird dogs.
National Championship (bird dogs) : A premier annual field-trial competition for pointing bird dogs in the United States. Its long courses and demanding bird work illustrate the specialized championship format.
Agility dog : A dog sport in which a handler directs a dog through a timed obstacle course. Agility tests obstacle performance, not hunting behavior in field-like conditions.
Flushing dog : A hunting dog that searches close to a hunter and drives game birds into flight. Spaniel trials test the close-searching and flushing work this dog performs in the field.
Game bird : A bird hunted for sport or food, including species such as pheasants, grouse, and quail. The species used or represented determine the scent and search challenges in bird-dog trials.
