Fifth Dalai Lama

Ngawang Lobsang Gyatso (1617–1682) was the fifth Dalai Lama, a Gelug school leader who unified much of Tibet under Ganden Phodrang rule and established Lhasa as its political center.

Ganden Phodrang: The Tibetan government established under the Fifth Dalai Lama, based at Drepung and later centered in Lhasa. Its institutions gave his unification a lasting political structure.
Güshi Khan: A Khoshut Mongol ruler who helped the Fifth Dalai Lama defeat his Tibetan rivals and establish Gelug political dominance. His military intervention made the Dalai Lama’s political ascendancy possible.
Ngawang Lobsang Gyatso: The personal name of the Fifth Dalai Lama, who lived from 1617 to 1682. This is the name under which he was recognized and is often studied.
