Figure skating jump : An element in which a skater takes off from an edge or toe pick, rotates in the air, and lands on one foot. Jumps are among the most technically demanding elements, with names tied to takeoff and rotation.
Grade of execution : A judging measure that raises or lowers an element's value according to the quality of its performance. It adjusts an element's base value for features such as control, height, and precision.
Short program : A figure-skating segment with a required set of elements and a prescribed maximum duration. Its required content constrains which elements a skater must include.
Singles figure skating : A discipline in which one skater performs a program of jumps, spins, and other elements. Singles uses an element set that differs from partner disciplines, especially in its jump content.
Figure skating spin : An element in which a skater rotates continuously around a vertical axis while maintaining positions on the ice. Spins test rotation, balance, and position changes without traveling far across the rink.
Base value : The predetermined point value assigned to a figure-skating element based on its recognized difficulty. It establishes the starting score before judges assess execution.
Free skating : A figure-skating segment in which skaters choose much of their technical content within time and rule limits. Element selection in free skating balances scoring potential, risk, and program composition.
Pair skating : A discipline in which two skaters perform together, including throws, lifts, and synchronized elements. Pair skating includes partner elements absent from singles.
Figure skating step sequence : A planned series of turns and steps performed across the ice, often incorporating changes of direction and body movement. Step sequences combine edge control, turns, and musical interpretation into a scored element.
Technical panel : The officials who identify performed elements and determine their technical characteristics during a competition. The panel decides what element was completed before its score is finalized.
